The curtain raiser for the 2019 season was the Goodwood Members meeting on the first weekend of April. We headed to the 77MM with Cameron Jackson & the Crossle Oldsmobile MK5S in the Dan Gurney cup. A car new to Cameron & ourselves. With one test session the week previous under our belt we headed to East Sussex and the historic Goodwood circuit.
Qualifying came along on the Saturday afternoon at a very cold but thankfully dry Goodwood. Cameron’s times got progressively better throughout the session and on his 10th & final lap he managed his best time. A time that the chasing pack could not get with 1.7 seconds of. Pole position for Cameron in his first meeting with the Crossle. A result which certainly shocked the paddock and squashed people’s preconceived ideas the car. With some setup work and Cameron’s driving ability we have proved that the Crossle could be tamed.
Cameron shared the front row with Aston Martin test driver Chris Goodwin in his Lotus 23B and Craig Dolby the ex Formula Renault & Superleague Formula ace in his Lotus-Oldsmobile 19.
The union jack dropped and all three cars got away safely, Cameron & the Crossle with a little too much wheel spin, therefore it was Craig Dolby who won the drag race into Madgwick for the first time. Dolby then dropped a rear wheel on the grass at St Marys and allowed Cameron a run around the outside to take the lead heading up to Lavant.
The spectacle of the overall race was then spoiled on lap two when Dolby had to retire with an issue and again on lap 3 when Goodwin had a spin at Lavant. It left Cameron with an unassailable lead and after 5 laps we had a cushion of 14.8 seconds. It meant the rest of the race was a lonely one for Cameron and was all about maintaining a consistent pace while conserving the car and his lead.
At the end of lap 15 Cameron collected the chequered flag, his first win in the Crossle and his first win at the Goodwood Circuit.
The 2019 season was off to a perfect start for Hi-Tech with a pole & race win.
