The brutish pre 1966 unlimited sports car grid that is the Whitsun Trophy at the Goodwood Revival had to wait until early Friday evening to take to the famous Goodwood Circuit. Cameron took to the circuit in the Crossle surrounded by Lola T70 Spyder’s, Ford GT40’s, Mclaren’s & an entry of high quality drivers including Karun Chandock, Darren Turner & Adrian Newey to name a few. This was Hi-Tech’s first foray in to the Whitsun Trophy.
Cameron entered the pit lane after 6 completed laps of qualifying to watch what remained of the session, pleased with his lap time, the way the car was setup & running, and not wanting to risk the car unnecessarily. As the chequered fell on the session we had ended up P3, meaning a front row start for the race beckoned.
Sunday afternoon arrived, the Crossle & Cameron took their position on the outside of the front row of a sun covered Goodwood circuit. The front row also consisting of Karun Chandock in the Mclaren-chevrolet M1A & Mike Whitaker in the Lola Chevrolet T70 Spyder.
As the flag dropped Cameron & Chandock got off the line well, leaving Whitaker in their tyre smoke. Ahead was 25 minutes of high quality, deafening sports car action. Chandock edged in to the lead & continued lap by lap to pull a sizeable gap on Cameron. Mid race and further down the field there was contact at the chicane, resulting in a safety car while the chicane was repaired.
The safety car grouped the field back together and as they resumed racing it gave Mike Whitaker a chance to claw his way back up the order, firstly passing John Spiers & then Cameron.
Cameron then had a hairy experience a Fordwater, running wide & getting almost all four wheels on the grass. Fortunately it did not result in a bigger accident.
Spiers then managed to pass Cameron & we had dropped out the top 3, until on the penultimate lap Cameron tried a brave move for a podium position around the outside of John Spiers at Noname, taking the place.
Cameron managed to hold on to the chequered flag & take his, the Crossle & Hi-Tech’s first podium in the Whitsun Trophy at the Revival.
An unbelievable result for the team that shocked the entire Goodwood paddock & spectators, and proved exactly what this car can do when it is excellently prepared & driven.
Cameron certainly deserved the plaudits, trophy & cigar for this drive. Terrifying was the word that i believed he used to describe it.
However, the burnout attempt was embarrassing.
